Baas Tosses Gem as Biola Downs Bethany 8-0

Josh Baas allowed just five hits over seven innings for the win

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Senior Josh Baas threw seven innings of shutout ball, allowing just five hits and striking out six as Biola swept a two-game, non-conference series against Bethany University with an 8-0 win on Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.

Biola improves to 7-4 with its third win in its last four games while Bethany falls to 2-8 on the season.

Baas (1-1), who suffered a tough loss in his previous outing, was absolutely dominate on the afternoon. He opened the game by retiring the first six batters and allowed just two base runners through the first five innings.

He didn't need much offensive support, but still received eight runs of support. Junior Chris Foreman went 2-for-5 and scored two runs while junior Nick Rotkowitz added two hits in four at-bats while driving in a pair. Foreman, who really struggled offensively to start the season, now has seven hits in his last 15 at-bats.

The Eagles plated their first run in the bottom of the first inning, as Foreman and Rotkowitz led off the game with back-to-back singles. Senior Kris Cook, who wrapped up yesterday's game with a walk-off, two-run home run in the 10th inning, drove in the first run today with a sacrifice fly to score Foreman.

In the third, Biola added two more runs to go up 3-0. Foreman led off the frame with a triple, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rotkowitz. Hawkins Gebbers followed with a double down the left field line, reached third on a flyout, then scored on a double-steal.

The Eagles blew open the game with a four-spot in the sixth as Scott Nelson hit a bases-clearing double to drive in three, then scored on a single by Rotkowitz.

The Eagles added another for good measure in the seventh as DJ Harbeson drove home Matt McQueen with a double for the eighth run of the game.

Biola's Kyle Atkins pitched the final two innings in his first action of the season allowing just one baserunner on a walk to close out the game.

The Eagles now return to GSAC play, hosting Vanguard University on Thursday (Feb. 21) for a single game at 2:00 p.m. at
