BOX SCORE
COSTA MESA, Calif. — Sophomore guard Danny Campbell tied a school record with eight three-pointers to lead Biola University to a 73-66 win over Vanguard in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday night at The Pit in Costa Mesa.
The Eagles improve to 11-8 on the season and 3-8 in GSAC play, snapping a four-game losing streak with the victory. The Lions drop to 11-6 and 5-4 in conference action.
Campbell scored a game-high 31 points to lead Biola, hitting 8-of-10 from beyond the arc and adding four rebounds. Campbell's effort makes him the fourth Biola player to hit eight three-pointers in a game. It was most recently done during the 1999-2000 season by Gary Heyer and Marcus White.
The Eagles got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 10-1 lead as Campbell hit his first two three-pointers in the game's opening minute. After the Lions cut that lead to two at 19-17, Biola responded with a quick run and took a 29-20 lead to the half. The Eagles shot over 40 percent in the first half while holding Vanguard to 22 percent shooting form the field. The Lions' starters struggled mightily, hitting just 3-of-17 in the opening stanza.
In the second half, Biola kept the pressure on and never let Vanguard get within five points the rest of the way. The last such time came with 7:08 left after a three-pointer by Brian Roberts. But the Eagles responded with back-to-back three-pointers by Campbell and Josh Salo to take their biggest lead of the game at 58-47 with 5:57 to go.
Biola hit nine three-pointers on the night, but the Lions remained close thanks to 12 3's of their own. Roberts led Vanguard with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the three-point line. He was one of six Lions to hit a three.
But the difference came in the paint where Biola finally broke out of its inside slump and outscored the Lions 28-12. Forwards Danny Jones and Rocky Hampton scored 16 and 10 points, respectively, with Jones adding eight rebounds and Hampton six.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Jan. 29), traveling to face arch-rival Azusa Pacific University at 7:30 p.m. at the Felix Events Center in Azusa.
