BOX SCORE
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Ryan Parker scored twice–including the match-winner just 38 seconds into the first overtime–as Biola University defeated Trinity International University in the 2007 Biola Classic on Friday night at Al Barbour Field.
The Eagles improve to 4-3-0 on the season with the win while the Trojans fell to 0-5-1 overall.
Parker's pair of goals gives him five on the season and four in the last three matches. The senior had just three goals in limited action last year, but has provided the bulk of the Biola offense in 2007.
His first tally came early in the match as he headed home a great cross from fellow senior Colin Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick sent the ball into the box and found Parker streaking across for the goal to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Biola would dominate play through the first 45 minutes, registering nine shots to the Trojans four with seven shots on target.
However, in the second half, Trinity International came alive. The real excitement started in the 65th minute as Trinity earned a corner kick and sent the ball into the box. Midfielder Bobby McColl appeared the have the game-tying goal but Parker stepped in an “took one for the team” in the midsection, and the following shot by Andy Plascencia was blocked out for another corner.
After Parker recovered, the Trojans took another corner kick and had another shot beat the keeper only to have it also cleared off the line. The follow-up shot was saved by Biola's freshman netminder Tyler Higgins.
The Trojans finally broke through in the 73rd minute as Kennedy Chongo headed the ball past Higgins to knot the score.
Both teams had numerous chances in the waning moments, but the game remained tied and headed into overtime. However, Parker made sure the home crowd of 377 went home happy, lofting a quick shot over the Trojans' netminder to end the match just 38 seconds into the extra frame. Parker was wide open at the top of the box after receiving a nice pass from freshman Phillip Friehe.
In the opening game of the tournament, Simon Fraser scored a pair of late goals and held on for a 2-1 win over Vanguard University. Biola and Simon Fraser will square off for the Biola Classic Championship at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 15). Vanguard takes on Trinity International in the other game Saturday, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m.
