Morrow Has Another Big Game as Biola Downs Westmont 17-4

Jimmy Johnson pitched well to earn the victory

BOX SCORE

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Danny Morrow had another big day against Westmont, going 2-for-5 with four RBIs as Biola completed a season sweep over the Warriors with a 17-4 win Thursday afternoon at Russ Carr Field.

The Eagles improve to 24-18 overall with their second straight win and move to 16-14 in the GSAC. The sweep over the Warriors combined with Vanguard being swept by Azusa Pacific moves Biola into fifth in the GSAC standings with six conference games remaining.

Westmont continued to struggle, falling to 5-34 on the year and 3-27 in conference.

Morrow, who had a pair of home runs and five RBIs in Biola's 16-11 win in La Mirada on Wednesday, continued to dominate the Warriors. While being held to just two singles, he drove in four runs and reached in five of his seven plate appearances.

Chris Foreman continued his outstanding season, going 4-for-6 on the day with two runs scored and an RBI. Foreman is now batting .442 on the year and is flirting with the Biola school record of .444 set by Carl Galloway in during the 2004 season.

After allowing a run in the bottom of the first, Biola jumped back into the lead, sending nine men to the plate and scoring four times in the top of the second. Matt McQueen and Nick Dietzen opened the inning with back-to-back singles followed by Bobby Slater reaching on an error by the left fielder.

Daniel Bodemer then drew a walk to force in McQueen followed by an RBI-single by Chris Foreman to score Dietzen and make it 2-1. After a double play allowed a third run to score, Morrow picked up his first RBI with a single down the left field line.

Westmont didn't go away, though, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run home run by Anthony Martinez.

But the lead was short-lived as Biola sent 15 batters to the plate and scored nine runs to put the game away. Dietzen drove in the first run with an RBI-double, then scored on a run-scoring single by Slater. Hawkins Gebbers added a two-run single later in the inning and Slater picked up his second RBI of the inning with a double.

After allowing four runs in the first two inning, Biola starter Jimmy Johnson settled down and--despite allowing a baserunner in all but the third--did not allow Westmont back in the game. Johnson earned the victory to move to 6-3 on the year, allowing the four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

The Eagles tacked on four runs over the final four innings, but did not allow a monumental comeback similart to the 10 runs scored over the last two frames by Westmont in Wednesday's game.

Josh Baas pitched a perfect eighth inning and Steven Alexander--who homered against Westmont on Wednesday--closed out the ninth.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 21) with a big GSAC doubleheader at San Diego Christian starting at Noon. The Eagles are just two games back of third place Concordia pending the results of CUI's game at fourth-place Cal Baptist tonight.
