Concordia Sweeps Biola with Pair of Shutouts

Emily Gray pitched well, but suffered the loss in game two

GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE

IRVINE, Calif. --- A month after Biola pulled off a pair of impressive shutouts to sweep Concordia, CUI returned the favor with a pair of shutouts of its own, winning 3-0 and 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon in Irvine.

Biola falls to 28-12 on the season and 9-9 in GSAC play while Concordia improves to 30-15 and 7-11 in conference.

Concordia jumped out to a quick lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, as Shannon Walton drove in a pair of runs with a single through the right side. CUI picked up a big insurance run in the sixth with a pinch-hit, RBI-single by Chelsea Rickling.

Biola's Katie Gustaveson allowed just two earned runs over six innings, striking out five and walking just one batter, but it wasn't enough for her to earn her eighth straight win. Gustaveson, who retired seven straight at one point, suffered the loss and drops to 14-6 on the season.

Concordia's Natalie Brown picked up the win to move to 11-7 on the year. She allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in the game.

Biola had just a couple of chances to score, but were unable to break through. In the second, BU had Kacie Lyding and Jacqie Hudson at second and first with one out, but Brown was able to get back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Again Lyding and Hudson were on base with one out in the seventh, but Brown forced a pair of groundouts to end the threat and the game.

In game two, Concordia scored its lone runs of the game in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a Biola error. Nubia Enriquez led the inning off with a single, was sacrificed to second, then scored on a single by Ashley Evans. After stealing second, Evans came around to score after an error to make it 2-0.

That was the last threat Concordia would have against Biola starter Emily Gray, who would retire the last nine batters of the game. But the Biola bats were quieted again, this time by Racher Reekstin, who scattered five hits over seven innings to run her record to 10-4.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 21) to take on rival Azusa Pacific at Noon on Freedom Field.
