LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Chris Foreman and Nick Dietzen supplied the offense while Jordan Litle and Derek Dietzen provided the pitching as Biola swept a GSAC doubleheader against Fresno Pacific University by scores of 10-6 and 10-1 on Saturday at Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles (15-5, 11-4 GSAC) have now won 11 straight games, the third-longest streak in school history. The record is 14 which was done twice, the last time coming in 1999.
The Sunbirds drop to 10-11 on the season and 4-10 in GSAC play.
Foreman had a great day at the plate for the Eagles, going 5-for-9 with two doubles and three RBIs. Nick Dietzen recovered after a tough first game, going 3-for-3 in the second game with a three-run home run and an RBI-double. He finished the day with four RBIs and four runs scored.
His brother Derek pitched a spectacular game in the nightcap, holding Fresno Pacific to just one unearned run on two hits over 4-1/3 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Sunbirds, who came into the day batting near .330 as a team, could not catch up to Dietzen's fastball.
Litle picked up the win in game one, allowing four runs on five hits over five innings. He is now 3-0 on the year.
After scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one, Biola fell behind in the second. Justin Rhoades tied the scored with a two run home run to left field which was followed immediately by a solo shot off the bat of Jared Coleman to give FPU a 3-2 lead.
The Sunbirds would tack on another in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Justin Crisp. Biola struck back, though with four runs in the bottom of the frame--all of which were unearned. Matt Smith capped off the inning with a two-run home run to left field which put the Eagles back up 6-4.
Danny Morrow's RBI-single in the bottom of the fifth made it 7-4, but Fresno got the run back in the top of the sixth on Coleman's second home run of the game and of the season.
Biola then added two in the bottom of the seventh inning as Forman singled home Kris Cook, then scored three batters later on a walk to Nick Dietzen.
Fresno Pacific would get an unearned run in the top of the eighth to close the gap back to three at 9-6, but Foreman's two-out double scored Scott Nelson for the final run of the game.
Charlie Gausepohl picked up his second save of the year as he struck out three and allowed just one hit over the final 1-2/3 innings.
Antone Ontiveros (2-3) took the loss despite allowing just one earned over six innings.
Biola again struck first in game two, as Daniel Bodemer singled home Nick Dietzen for the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning.
Fresno Pacific got the run back in the top of the third as Adam Alva scored on a Biola error.
Biola came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, the big blow coming off the bat of Nick Dietzen, who hit a two-run shot to left field to put the Eagles up 4-1.
Biola would add two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Bodemer finished the day going 4-for-8 with a run scored. Scott Nelson was 3-for-4 on the afternoon with three runs scored.
Biola's bullpen was masterful in the doubleheader, allowing just seven hits and one earned run over 6-2/3 innings.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday (Mar. 14) as they host a non-conference game against Dixie State College (Utah) at 2:30 p.m. on Eagles Diamond.
