SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Westmont College used a late run to rally from a 10-point second-half deficit en route to a 60-56 win over Biola University on Tuesday night at Murchison Gymnasium in Santa Barbara.
The Eagles (13-13, 7-9 GSAC) was led by senior guard Matt Emadi, who scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting on the night. The Warriors (14-9, 9-7) received a game-high 19 points from Andrew Schmalbach, including a clutch three-pointer to tie the game up with 1:13 remaining.
With the loss, Biola drops into seventh place in the GSAC standings, just one-half game ahead of The Master's college, which was idle tonight, and one game behind Pt. Loma Nazarene.
The Eagles looked to have things going well in the second half, taking a 48-38 lead with just over eight minutes to go on a free-throw by senior Solomon Mercado. However, Wesmont quickly rebounded thanks to a pair of three-pointers by Schmalbach and tied up the score at 48 with 4:59 to go on a a layup by Tyler Dutton.
Biola still led by three at 56-53 before Schmalbach drained another long three-pointer to tie things up with 1:13 left.
Junior forward Danny Jones, who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, missed a contested jumper with 55 seconds left. Wesmont's Luke Allen then hit a running-jumper with 25 ticks left, then sealed the deal with a pair of free throws after a three-point miss by Biola's Marlon King.
Santiago Aguirre had a good night inside for the Warriors, scoring 16 points and adding eight rebounds and four assists. Allen finished the game with 11 pointsand five boards.
With the win, Westmont earns its first season sweep over Biola since the 2002-03 season. The Warriors have now won four of the last five games between the former rivals.
The road for the Eagles doesn't get any easier as they now go head-to-head with GSAC leading and NAIA No. 3-ranked Concordia University. The other Eagles invade Chase Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 17) at 7:30 p.m.
