Jolin Records Hat Trick as Biola Downs Hope 5-1

Gabby Jolin scored three goals to help the Eagles down Hope

BOX SCORE

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Freshman Gabby Jolin recorded a hat trick to lead Biola University to a 5-1 win over Hope International University in a Golden State Athletic Conference women's soccer match on Wednesday night at Al Barbour Field in La Mirada.

The Eagles improve to 3-7-2 on the season and snapped a seven-match winless streak with the victory. They also pick up their first GSAC victory on the year and are now 1-3-2 in conference action. The Royals fall to 7-5-1 overall and 1-4-0 in GSAC play.

Jolin and fellow freshman forward Tara Roetter combined on three of Biola's five goals, four of which came in the first half.

The first goal came in the sixth minute as Roetter fed a quick pass to Jolin who slipped past the Hope defense and beat the keeper one-on-one. Jolin scored again in the 20th minute, heading home a brilliant cross off the foot of Roetter.

Sophomore Kahlie Reinecke got into the act in the 37th minute with her second goal of the season. Reinecke took advantage of a ball that slipped through the fingers of the goalkeeper and tapped in a quick shot to put the Eagles up 3-0.

Just before halftime, Jolin scored her third goal of the match as Roetter again found her with a through-ball. Jolin then beat the keeper with a great move and walked the ball into the goal.

Biola's fifth goal of the night came in the 53rd minute as sophomore Hollie Affentranger blasted a shot past the Hope goalkeeper off a corner kick from senior Brandi Johannsen.

Hope got on the board with a goal just two minutes later as Jessica Sandoval collected the ball in the box and scored off a Royal's corner kick.

The offensive outburst by the Eagles was something not seen since Biola downed Auburn-Montgomery 5-0 in the 2004 NAIA National Tournament quarterfinal match.

Jolin has now scored five goals for the Eagles in the four matches she has played. Her hat trick was just the 12th by a Biola player and the first since Krystal McKay scored three times in a 9-1 win over Embry-Riddle University in 2004.

The Eagles hope to keep the offense rolling as they host arch-rival and No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific on Saturday (Oct. 13) at 4:30 p.m.
