LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Fouls and turnovers plagued Biola in the second half as Holy Names overcame a halftime deficit in a 63-57 victory in Biola's home opener Friday night.
The Eagles, who drop to 2-1 on the season, shot 37.5 percent from the field, but committed 27 fouls---14 in the second half---leading to 37 free throw attempts by the Hawks (2-1).
Sophomore Megann Alberts led Biola with 20 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the field, but foul trouble saw her foul out with three minutes remaining.
Freshman Richae Kater added 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks while sophomore Summer Matthews had six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Eagles played well in the first half, building a 10-point lead at 25-15 and went to halftime up by eight.
In the second half, Holy Names cut into the lead thanks to improved shooting and fewer fouls. After Biola once again stretched the lead to 10 at 32-22, the Hawks went on an 8-0 run to pull within two.
Alberts then scored six points on three easy layups to give the Eagles a lead of 40-31 before another 9-0 run by the Hawks tied the score at 40.
Biola would take its final lead on the next possession with a jumper by Alberts which was quickly answered by Holy Names.
The Hawks would stretch the lead out to as many as seven on two occasions as the Eagles hit just six of their final 21 shots.
Holy Names as led by Gelater Fullwood's 17 points and 11 rebounds. Martha Spivey scored 12 points and had 10 boards.
Biola hosts the Melbourne Roos in an exhibition game on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 12 noon.
