No. 16 Biola Cools off Red-Hot Vanguard, 3-1

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore Meghan Scheenstra had 20 kills and junior Brittany Wing added a season-best 18 to lead No. 16 Biola to a 30-19, 24-30, 30-18, 30-20 over Vanguard University on Thursday night at Chase Gymnasium.

Vanguard (12-11, 5-10 GSAC) had knocked off No. 3 Cal Baptist and No. 8 Azusa Pacific in conference matches last week. However, the upset streak ended as the Eagles (16-10, 9-7 GSAC) dominated with a balanced attack and some great defense.

Biola struggled with the Lions to open the match in game one, falling behind 14-10 before heating up. Wing and junior Caroline Rutenbar served tough as the Eagles went on a 13-2 run and cruised to an easy win.

Vanguard came alive in the second game, going on a 7-3 run to break up a 13-13 tie and take a commanding 20-16 lead in a close, back-and-forth game. The two teams basically traded points as the Lions held on to tie the match.

But it was all Eagles in games three and four as the defense stepped up and held Vanguard to a combined .000 attack percentage in the final two games while swinging nearly .250 themselves.

Biola jumped on the Lions early in both games, taking a 13-6 lead in game three and a 12-7 lead in game four.

After all was said and done, Biola held a .294 overall attack percentage to Vanguard's .094 and had an edge in blocking at 11-8.

Sophomore Kelsey Mitchell also had a strong performance, recording 13 kills with a .333 attack percentage.

Wing had one of her best nights of the year with a .481 attack percentage, five aces, 14 digs, five assists and two blocks.

Biola returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 28) for a non-conference matchup with Embry-Riddle University of Arizona at 7:00 p.m.
