Eagles Sweep Westmont with Surprising Ease

SANTA BARBARA, Calif --- No. 16 Biola continued its hot play as of late with an impressive 30-21, 30-9, 30-22 win at Westmont College on Tuesday night.

While the Eagles (15-10, 8-7 GSAC) geared up for what they though could be one of its toughest road contests in a while, Westmont (7-12, 5-10 GSAC) was off its game and struggled to keep up.

Sophomore Meghan Scheenstra led the Eagles with 16 kills while junior Brittany Wing added eight in the winning effort.

The Eagles played pretty evenly with the Warriors in the first game. With Biola up 23-18, Westmont pulled close at 23-21 before Biola rattled off seven straight points to win game one going away.

In the second game, the wheels came off for Westmont as great passing and solid defense by Biola forced the Warriors to hit at a -.114 hitting percentage. Westmont fell behind early by a 12-1 count, committing eight errors in the stretch.

Junior Kristen Peterson served tough in the game, recording four aces on her first rotation, then coming back with three more her second time around to serve out the game. Overall, she had eight aces on the night.

Biola had little trouble in game three, scoring two points for each of Westmont's points through the first half of the match. Later, the two teams traded points until Biola had sealed the deal.

Peterson's eight aces were not only the best by a Biola player in 2006, but also ties the mark for the most by a GSAC athlete this year.

The Biola defense did a great job of shutting down the Westmont attack, holding them to a .000 attack percentage and just 25 kills on the night. The Eagles, on the other hand, had a .288 swinging percentage and recorded 45 kills and just 11 errors.

Biola hosts a red-hot Vanguard squad on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Chase Gymnasium. The Lions knocked off two top-10 opponents last week, downing No. 3 Cal Baptist and No. 8 Azusa Pacific both in five-games.
