LA MIRARA, Calif. --- Westmont's Blake Thompson converted a penalty kick in the 20th minute and the Warrior defense made it stand up as Westmont pulled a stunning upset over No. 17 Biola on Tuesday night at Al Barbour Field.
Despite holding a 15-7 shot advantage and 6-3 edge in corner kicks, the Eagles (8-5-0 overall, 4-4-0 GSAC) were shutout for just the second time this season.
The Warriors kept their playoff hopes alive with the victory and improved to 7-5-3 overall, 2-2-3 in conference play.
The spot kick was awarded early in the match as a Biola defender missed in his attempt to slide the ball away from an Westmont forward.
It was the second time in as many matches the Eagles had given up a PK, though netminder Ryan George was able to make a great save on the attempt by Fresno Pacific on Tuesday.
However, it was not to be this time as Thompson deposited the ball into the lower right hand corner as George dove left.
The Eagles mounted numerous attacks and had their best chance to score in the 34th minute as freshman Derek Friehe got a head on a great cross into the box only to have it bounce off the post.
Biola kept up the pressure in the second half, recording nine shots and forcing Westmont netminder Logan Frank to make three saves--all of which were impressive.
Frank made five saves on the night and picked up his fifth shutout of the season.
Biola, which averaged 2.4 goals per game coming into the match, was held off the scoreboard for just the second time this season. The first came in a 1-0 loss to Cal State San Marcos in its first home match of the year.
The Eagles return to the pitch on Wednesday (Oct. 25), hosting Point Loma Nazarene at 7:00 p.m. in its next to last match of the regular season.
