Last Second Goal Salvages 2-2 Tie With No. 9 Cal Baptist

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After blowing an early one-goal lead, Biola waited until the last second--literally--to score the equalizer and eventually record a 2-2 draw with No. 9 California Baptist Tuesday night at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles' Amanda Patrick headed in a free kick from Brandi Johannsen with one second remaining in regulation to knot the game and force overtime.

Biola (4-4-3 overall, 0-3-2 GSAC), which had struggled early in the GSAC schedule, picked up a huge point in the standings on the backs of one of its best played matches of the season.

Senior Jordan Bishop opened the scoring early in the match with a great finish off a cross from junior Laurelle Robertson. The goal came in the sixth minute and gave Biola the early lead.

However, Cal Baptist (8-3-1, 2-2-1) responded with a goal in the 30th minute. It was the first of two goals scored by Jacaluyn van den Raadt. She would add another in the 63rd minute which would give the Lancers a 2-1 lead.

The Lancers kept the pressure up after their second goal and had two great opportunities stopped by Biola netminder Keri Schulz. The senior made 10 saves in the match including two big ones in the second period on breakaway chances for the Lancers.

As time began to wind down, the Eagles were able to sustain a bit of pressure and peppered the Lancers net with shot after shot. However, nothing seemed to be going in.

With under 20 seconds to go, a Cal Baptist foul gave Biola a free kick from the near side of the goal, about 10 yards outside of the box. Johannsen quickly spotted the ball, then looped a prayer toward the net which Patrick answered with her last-second header.

Biola dominated the first overtime, throwing six shots on net and controlling play. The Eagles had two great chances to win the match but another header by Patrick and a shot by senior Jenni Loya went just high.

Biola looks to get its first GSAC victory of the year when it travels to Vanguard University for a match Saturday (Oct. 14) at 5:00 p.m.
