TOP MOMENTS OF 2009-10: #5 - Hampton Scores 32 to Lead Men's Basketball to NAIA Quarterfinals

Rocky Hampton
Editor's Note: This is the sixth in a 10-part series recapping the Top 10 sports moments of the 2009-10 year at Biola as compiled by the Biola Sports Information Office. A new moment will be revealed each day with the top moment of the year announced on Friday, June 18. See the bottom of the page for a schedule of releases and links to past moments.

The day began with Rocky Hampton nearly being hit by a crescent wrench dropped from the top of the 18-story hotel Biola is staying at. It ended with Hampton dropping the hammer on Park University, scoring a career-high 32 points to lead the Eagles to an 80-64 victory over the Pirates and into the quarterfinals of the NAIA Championship Tournament.

Hampton was nearly unstoppable in the game, hitting 10-of-14 from the field and--more impressively--hitting 12-of-14 from the free throw line to score 32 points in the game. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season and added two blocks and a steal.

Despite a loud crowd of Park supports, Biola managed to hang tough with the Pirates through much of the first half. The Eagles closed out the final 10 minutes of the period with a 23-5 run as Park went 1-of-16 from the field. Biola would lead 41-25 at the break with Hampton already scoring 23 points.

The Pirates would close the gap a bit in the second, closing the gap to 10 with just over a minute left, but Hampton converted an old-fashioned three-point play to seal the win.

Biola's quarterfinal appearance was its first since the 2004-05 season and it's the sixth trip overall. Despite holding a big halftime lead in that game, the Eagles season came to an end with a loss to the eventual National Champion Oklahoma Baptist University. Biola wrapped up the year with 29-6 overall record and was ranked No. 5 in the final NAIA poll.
