Editor's Note: This is the fifth in a 10-part series recapping the Top 10 sports moments of the 2009-10 year at Biola as compiled by the Biola Sports Information Office. A new moment will be revealed each day with the top moment of the year announced on Friday, June 18. See the bottom of the page for a schedule of releases and links to past moments.
Biola received a strong, balanced attack and held on for a thrilling 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8 upset victory over rival and No. 3-ranked Concordia on Saturday, October 17.
In what has become a bitter rivalry over the last few years, the battle of "Eagles" had gone the way of Concordia as Biola had won just twice in the previous 12 matches between the two. However, everything seemed to go right for Biola on that Saturday night.
Kim Russell had 16 kills to pace Biola, but it was a team effort as nine of the ten members of the visiting team notched a least one kill. Biola also added 13 team blocks including 10 from Tavea Hampton.
Leading 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Biola let a late 16-12 lead slip away and conceded momentum to Concordia as the home side tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 victory.
But Biola jumped out to an early lead in the fifth and deciding set and cruised to the big victory.
Biola would finish the year with a 23-11 overall record and reached the NAIA National Tournament for the third-consecutive season.
