Editor's Note: This is the fourth in a 10-part series recapping the Top 10 sports moments of the 2009-10 year at Biola as compiled by the Biola Sports Information Office. A new moment will be revealed each day with the top moment of the year announced on Friday, June 18. See the bottom of the page for a schedule of releases and links to past moments.
The Biola baseball team completed an impressive comeback thanks in large part to
Vinnie Fayard, who hit a school-record four home runs including a walk-off blast in the bottom of the 10th inning to knock off No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene 16-13 on Thursday, February 25.
Fayard's monster game helped the Eagles overcome an early 10-2 deficit to the second-ranked Sea Lions, who had already taken the first game of the four-game series 9-2 the day before.
After going 0-1 in his first two plate appearances, Fayard connected on a pair of solo home runs, the first in the fifth and second to lead off the eighth. The second home run cut the gap to 11-5, but the game still looked out of reach. But Biola rallied there in the eighth with Fayard capping an eight-run frame with a three-run home run to put the Eagles on top, 12-11.
Point Loma scored an unearned run in the ninth and tacked on a run in the top of the 10th to take a 13-12 lead into the bottom of the frame. But the Eagles weren't finished, quickly scoring a run and putting runners on first and second with one out. Despite having an open base, the Sea Lions decided to pitch to Fayard and he made them pay, belting the first pitch he saw over the center field fence to give the Eagles the walk-off win.
The sophomore finished the game going 4-for-5 with eight RBIs, tying the school record for RBIs set earlier in the season by teammate
Garrett Leon.
Baseball finished the season at 24-22, missing the GSAC playoffs in a race which came down to the final day.
