KANSAS CITY --- The day began with
Rocky Hampton nearly being hit by a crescent wrench dropped from the top of the 18-story hotel Biola is staying at. It ended with Hampton dropping the hammer on Park University, scoring a career-high 32 points to lead the Eagles to an 80-64 victory over the Pirates and into the quarterfinals of the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship.
Biola improves to 29-5 on the season with the victory and will take on No. 3 seed Oklahoma Baptist (30-3) in the quarterfinal round of the tournament on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT.
Hampton was nearly unstoppable in the game, hitting 10-of-14 from the field and--more impressively--hitting 12-of-14 from the free throw line to score 32 points in the game. He also pulled down 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season and added two blocks and a steal.
Earlier in the day, Hampton,
Danny Campbell and Biola athletic trainer
John Wiese were walking to lunch when a large crescent wrench crashed down to the sidewalk just seven feet in front of them. It came from the top of the hotel where some work was being done.
"I felt like I was in the zone tonight," said Hampton. "It was like everything I touched was going in. Every player has one of those games when it seems like they just can't miss. I just happened to have one at the NAIA Tournament."
Hampton's big night pushed him over the 1,600-point mark in his career, giving him 1,611 points. It also moved him into fourth place on the all-time scoring list at Biola. Hampton reached 1,000 rebounds during Wednesday's first-round game and became just the third player in school history to score 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in his Biola career.
Park University, located just under 10 miles from Municipal Auditorium, packed the arena with loud fans and sparked the Pirates to a strong start. Park was able to hang with the Eagles through the first 10 minutes of the game as the teams exchanged baskets. The Pirates tied the game at 20-20 with 10:24 to on a three-pointer by Juston Hairston, but that proved to be the last field goal for a while.
Biola closed out the final 10 minutes of the second half with a 23-5 run as Park went 1-of-16 from the field and the Eagles began to roll.
At intermission, Biola was shooting 57.1 percent from the field and Hampton was trailing Park 25-23. The Eagles also had their highest scoring first half of the season with 41 points and put the Pirates in their biggest halftime deficit of the season.
Park responded with another strong start to the second half, cutting Biola's lead to 13 early on and trailed by 14 at 51-37 after a layup by Herschel Rodgers at the 14:12 mark. But the Eagles again rattled off a long run, outscoring Park 12-0 over the next five minutes, taking their largest lead at 63-37 with 8:54 to go.
The Pirates chipped away at the lead over the next five minutes outscoring Biola 18-6 to close within 14 at 69-55 with 4:04 to go. Park continued to close the gap, pulling within 10 on a three-pointer by Terrell Dyer with 1:02 remaining, but after a miss on the other end, Hampton converted a three-point play with 37 seconds left to end the rally and give Biola the game.
The Eagles again shot better than 50 percent in the second half, hitting 11-of-20 from the field (55 percent) to finish with a 56.3 percent field goal percentage. That mark was the best Biola the Eagles in over a month and the fourth-best shooting night of the season.
"I thought we played really hard and I thought we came out ready to play," said Biola Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist. "We followed our game play and executed well. We made some mistakes down the stretch, but I think that's to be expected when you get a lead like we had."
Hampton wasn't the only one with a career-best night. Junior guard
Clay Martin had the hot hand from long range, connecting on 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and 6-of-10 overall for a career-high 16 points. Junior guard
Nate Rakestraw matched a season-best with 11 rebounds and added 11 points for his first double-double of the year. Rakestraw's previous season high in rebounds came on Wednesday night when he pulled down 11 in the Eagles' first-round win over Belhaven (Miss.).
Senior guard
Marlon King scored 12 points for the Eagles, adding nine assists, four rebounds and a steal in 39 minutes.
Rodgers led Park with 15 points, connecting on 6-of-9 from the field and adding five rebounds. Hairston added 14 points off the bench with Goldeng Deng recording 11 points.
"I thought we beat a very good team," said Holmquist. "Park is a tough team to play against because of all of the defenses they use. But I thought we executed well."
Biola's quarterfinal appearance is its first since the 2004-05 season when the Eagles reached the quarters but lost 58-56 to John Brown University (Ark.). It's the sixth time Biola has reached the quarterfinals overall, going 2-3 in those contests.
The Eagles' opponent is Oklahoma Baptist University, which defeated Texas Wesleyan University 85-75 in overtime. The Bison, which are the No. 3 seed in the tournament, overcame a 40-point night from TWU's Jamel White to advance in the extra period.
