Editor's Note: This is the third in a 10-part series recapping the Top 10 sports moments of the 2009-10 year at Biola as compiled by the Biola Sports Information Office. A new moment will be revealed each day with the top moment of the year announced on Friday, June 18. See the bottom of the page for a schedule of releases and links to past moments.
Biola continued its epic 2009 season with an impressive 1-0 victory over arch-rival Azusa Pacific University as
Zach Bautista scored with just 33 seconds left in the GSAC Semifinal, giving the Eagles their first-ever appearance in the conference championship game.
The victory was the second of the season against the Cougars. Earlier in the year, Biola beat APU 1-0 on Al Barbour Field in La Mirada, handing APU its first loss of the season. It was the first time the Eagles had defeated their arch-rivals twice in the same season and the first back-to-back series wins since 1978-79.
The GSAC semifinal game was a thriller from start to finish with Biola holding a slight 15-14 edge in shots. Each team had numerous attempts to score throughout the game, but held strong. That is until Biola finally broke through in the final minute.
The winning goal was the fourth goal of the season--and third match-winner--by Bautista, who tapped the ball just inside the far post off a great cross from the left by Kennedy Chongo. After the raucous celebration, Biola just needed a pair of long clearances to wear down the final 30 seconds of the match and secure a berth in the GSAC Championship match.
While the Eagles would lose 2-1 at The Master's in the championship game, they did earn an at-large berth to the NAIA National Tournament--just the third in the program's history--and wound up reaching the NAIA Quarterfinals, finishing with a record of 13-5-4.
