McAbee Leads Day One

Kyle McAbee paces an Eagles team that finished Day One in second place.

March 08, 2018

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. --- Biola had a change of pace on Thursday after playing in tournaments with 10-plus teams in recent weeks and playing through inclement weather in their last competition.

The Eagles welcomes the dry conditions and four-team field of the Palm Springs Break Tournament with open arms, finishing one stroke behind first-place William Jewell College after 18 holes and getting an excellent performance from junior Kyle McAbee.

"Everything was on point today, Tee shots, approach shots and short game," said Head Coach Max Allen. "We made plenty of putts but they were for par. I think everyone has a good round within them tomorrow. So we just need to make the putts and see if we can have four scores tally up for 288 or better and I think we finally get that win."

Biola's team score of 298 in round one ties its third round at the ERAU Co-ed Invite on Oct.11 for the best single-round score of the season. All five Eagles on the course sank at least one birdie and kept their score under 78 with McAbee, Austin Bishop and Parker Buck leading the way with top-10 scores.

"Kyle was our hottest player today," said Allen. "He made double bogey on his second hole then came right back with a chip-in eagle on the third hole. He hit great shots to make birdies but missed a few short putts on the back nine."

McAbee finished three shots under his previous season-best single-round score of 76 with four birdies and an eagle on Monday. Bishop rebounded from being four-over-par by getting birdies on 12, 14 and 15 to help him finish with a 75 but Buck was the most consistent Eagles of the day.

Buck pared 14 holes on Monday and added a birdie to card a 74 and join McAbee in lowing his best single-round score this season.

The Eagles will conclude the tournament tomorrow. Round two is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
