LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- When you are on the track team the season never really stops. Just a handful of days after Head Coach
Sean Henning's team cleaned up at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships they were right back at it to kick off the outdoor season with the Occidental Distance Carnival.
Â
Coach Henning held some of his student-athletes out of the meet to give them a short break, but the team he did take performed very well.
"All in all, we were happy with some of the results and feel that we have a lot of room to improve still," said Henning. "Look for bigger and better things as we continue throughout the season."
Â
Full results are still unavailable, but here's what we do know.
Â
Running her first 100m race of her collegiate career
Paige LaBare earned a victory with a :12.35. She was a part of the Eagles' nationals team that just wrapped up competition this past weekend.
Â
Another national team member, Sarah Prustupa, had to use a pole she'd never before used and still managed to come up second in the women's vault.
Â
Ashley Otah, another first-year Eagle, had a busy day filled with strong finishes. She placed third in the triple jump and high jump and came in at sixth in a competitive field of 100m hurdles.
Â
Ambernicole Hollinger, who already set a new Biola record this year, won the shot put with a toss of 12.22m.
Â
It was a great moment as
Jessica Cody, who's been battling injury since entering Biola, finally had the chance to run her first collegiate race. She completed the 5,000m in 18:45.
Â
Another first came in the women's 3,000m steeplechase as
Mandy Reyes ran it for the first time. She was just 18 seconds away from a national cut and Henning is convinced that she will continue to improve over the next few weeks and months.
Â
The men put out some strong performances too as a lot of Eagles were just getting back into the groove of competition.
Nathaniel Belden had a lifetime best in the triple jump. He made it 13.25 meters in the first attempt of his collegiate career, smashing what he's done up until this point. It was good enough for eighth place.
Â
Also notable for the men was
Christian Yaotani's eighth-place showing in the long jump and
Ryan Thompson's national cut in the 5,000m. He ran it in 14:54.
Â
Biola continues its season this coming Saturday when the Eagles compete at the Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet at Point Loma.
