All-GSAC Tennis

General

Ashford, Heer, Lee, Westwood Named All-GSAC

Kathryn Ashford headlines the way with her fourth all-conference selection.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After having both teams reach the semifinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament, Biola Tennis sees the rewards for its student-athletes hard work in the form of four all-conference recognitions.

Kathryn Ashford and Madeline Heer each earned All-GSAC honors on the women's side, while Lucas Lee and Philip Westwood brought home the award on the men's team.

The four combined conference honors is double the previous single-season best for the Biola Tennis programs. Last season only one women's player took home the honors, so it is a sign of vast improvement in Head Coach Dee Henry's & Brent Worthington's programs.

Ashford leads the way in this list of individuals as she earns the fourth conference honor of her stellar four-year career at Biola. She's the only tennis player in Biola history to win the All-GSAC award four times.

The senior art major finished her time as an Eagle with 32 career singles victories (5th all-time) and 40 career doubles wins (2nd all-time). She split time with Heer between No. 1 and No. 2 singles this season, but was the Eagles' clear No. 1 through much of her playing career and competed in a very talented GSAC landscape.

It is Heer's first career all-conference honors. The junior stepped into an entirely new role under coach Henry this season as she played a majority of her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She transformed into a key leader on the squad and earned a combined five conference victories.

Her eight wins in doubles this season was second only to Brooke Sanford. Heer earned seven of her eight doubles wins at the No. 1 position. She had an 8-12 overall doubles mark.

Lucas Lee claimed his second all-conference honors after taking one season off between his first and second campaigns at Biola. Lee and Westwood spent the entire season splitting time at the top of Worthington's lineup and managed to compete well no matter who was in which slot.

Lee posted a remarkable 14-6 overall singles record, including a 6-2 mark at No. 1 and 8-4 mark at No. 2. He finished the season with a 7-3 mark in his final 10 singles matches, which speaks to consistency throughout the entire year.

With his partner, Luke Mountain, Lee managed a winning record in doubles matches. He was 12-10 overall when playing with a partner. Mountain was his pairing for all but one match during the 2016 season.  They played 20 matches at No. 1 and went an even 10-10.

Westwood was the guy on this Biola team that knew how to win big matches precisely when the Eagles needed it most. His determination in the clutch is a big part of why he was the primary singles player to man the No. 1 slot. He worked an 11-10 overall singles record with all but eight of his matches coming against the best the opponent had to offer.

He was a big reason the Eagles were able to set a program record for wins in a season for the third consecutive year. He combined with Joe Turnquist to go 12-10 in doubles to play a key role in the Eagles' 11-win season.

It's Westwood's first career all-conference honor, and it comes in just his second season of collegiate tennis. With only one senior on this men's tennis roster it could be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.
