Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was not a match that was 100 percent free of blemish, but the 3-0 positive result sure is comforting to No. 2 Biola Volleyball fans accustomed to seeing dominant play from the Eagles.
Â
Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer's squad followed Thursday night's pair of grueling five-set victories with a breezy three-set victory (25-23, 25-18, 25-21) over No. 13 Davenport (Mich.) in its third of four matches at the 2015 Biola/Red Lion-Anaheim Summer Slam.
Â
"I thought we bounced back better than we have in the past," said Assistant Coach
Abbie Wright. "As we went throughout the game we cut their runs down, and I think that was beneficial for us."
Â
Davenport had the Eagles sweating for much of the opening set, as the Panthers began the game with tremendous offensive efficiency, only committing one attack error through their first 22 points of the set.
Â
The two teams remained evenly matched early on, with both teams leading by no more than three points in the set. Davenport had a three-point advantage at 22-19, but a five-point Biola run quickly turned the tide in the first set.
Â
That run was primarily powered by mistakes on the Davenport side of the net. The Panthers committed a ball handling error, set error and two attack errors, which along with an
Alyssa Mason kill helped the Eagles zoom to a set point.
Â
It took two attempts at set point, but ultimately a
Britta Blaser kill helped Biola jump out to a 1-0 advantage in its second-straight match.
Â
Set two was easily Biola's best of the day to this point, despite the Eagles' three service errors in the frame. The squad combined to hit .472 and landed 19 kills to account for a vast majority of their second-set points.
Â
Joclyn Kirton and
Ally Forsberg were the studs of the set as Kirton slammed and finessed her way to five of her team-leading 13 kills and Forsberg went 4-for-4 on attack attempts in the 25-18 runaway victory. Both players were solid throughout the match, earning attack percentages of .667 and .857, respectively.
Â
The clinching set was another close one, but as it went along it seemed a foregone conclusion that it would go in Biola's favor. After ties at 13, 14 and 15, Biola made another five-point run to open a 20-15 lead in the third. Kills from Mason and
Lauren Hoenecke and a sweet service ace from
Crissy Cunningham built what turned out to be Biola's insurmountable advantage.
Â
Mason and Kirton were Biola's only two to reach double-digit kills, with 10 and 13, respectively, but that was because the Eagles had a very well rounded team attack that featured five players with at least four kills in the three-setter.
Â
Biola would go on to win the set 25-21 and secure their first three-set victory of the 2015 season. The win improved Biola to 3-0 and dropped Davenport to 1-3.
Â
BU now has wins over three-straight top-15 opponents. At 6:00 p.m. they face their first unranked opponent of the year in Great Falls (Mont.). Both teams are 3-0 at this tournament, as UGF has wins over Menlo, Bellevue and The Master's.
