Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the third consecutive season No. 2 Biola Volleyball finishes its Biola/Red Lion-Anaheim Summer Slam schedule with an unblemished record. The Eagles escaped with a 4-0 record following a four-set win over a Great Falls team that entered the match also sporting a 3-0 mark.
Â
The two teams entered the match vying for an opportunity to join Southern Oregon as the only two teams to go 4-0 at this years tournament. A right sealed for the Eagles when a
Britta Blaser kill, one of her team-high 19, ended the match in set four (27-29, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18).
Â
Blaser was firing the ball all over the court from start to finish in this on as both teams featured an explosive attack throughout the four sets. Her 19 kills came on 31 attack attempts as she hit .484, which is a new season-best for her.
Â
"We made a conscious effort to be as physical as we could. We did not want to stop burying as many balls as we could," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "We wanted to come out and pressure, pressure, pressure. We just kept going pin-to-pin. Our outsides were relentless. They came out and did really good, just like you'd expect from seniors."
Â
The first set was the most exciting of the match, as each team had at least one set point and the set victor, UGF, went through four set points before finally sealing the 29-27 victory to put Biola back on its heels.
Â
Despite the unequal margin in set point attempts, Biola was clearly the better team throughout the first set in just about every statistical category, but it lost grip on a victory because of some shoddy serving. Biola's four service errors in the first gave just enough wiggle room for the Argos to escape with a win.
Â
The serving shaped up throughout the rest of the match as Biola limited itself to just three more service errors through the last three sets and even added nine service aces.
Ashton Arbuthnot had a team-high three aces, including two back-to-back in the decisive fourth set.
Â
Tess Van Grouw and
Alex Brehaut continued to work really well together on Biola's back line, keeping Great Falls from landing any easy kills and keeping the Argos to just three service aces. The pair combined for 21 digs and just one receiving error.
Â
"Lex came out and dug some sweet balls," said Seltzer.
Â
The front row was working just as hard defensively, recording 11 total team blocks.
Lauren Hoenecke led the way with her hands on eight of those blocks, including her second solo block of the day. She also added seven kills and hit .382 in a well-rounded performance.
Â
That defense helped set up a Biola offense that was on point all night long. The Eagles had three or fewer attacking errors in three of the four sets and combined to hit .393.
Â
Every bit of that offensive success was needed against a UGF attack that was nearly as effective. The Argos hit .311 and were led by a strong 15 kills from Madison Wilhelm.
Â
Biola saved its best for last, hitting .455 with 18 kills in the final frame to finish off a Great Falls team that had a fantastic tournament but just couldn't measure up to the plethora of arms Biola features.
Â
At the top of the Eagles kills list was Blaser, followed by
Alyssa Mason (12) and
Karly Dantuma (8).
Â
"It was a match where we had to use our outsides, and use them well," said Seltzer. "We did just that. They did a great job."
The Eagles improve to 4-0 while the Argos fall to 3-1 on the year. Up next for Biola is its official home opener against Oklahoma City at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 29.
