LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a night of honor, prestige and recognition at Andrews Banquet Room on Saturday evening, as Biola Athletics inducted its esteemed second class of athletes.
Jim Blagg, Natasha (Miller) Jackson and Tim Worrell each battled through four years of intense athletic competition representing the school well while wrestling, running, jumping, throwing and pitching.
All of their hard work as student-athletes and individuals paid off o Saturday, when they joined last year's inductees and doubled the size of BU's Hall of Fame.
Blagg wrestled four years at Biola, but could have wrestled at any level of collegiate competition. He was Biola wrestling's only National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national champion and he was the team MVP each of his four seasons. He was introduced by his coach and current BU staffer Matthew Orr.
"Two things stood out to me about my time at Biola," said Blagg. "One was the relationships I formed, and the other was Biola's commitment to biblical values."
Jackson participated in track and field for the Eagles from 2007 through 2011 and earned every type of special recognition that is available in her sport. She was a 12-time NAIA national champion and currently holds two NAIA records.
Perhaps even more of a testament to the make-up of Jackson is her scholar-athlete recognition and her distinction as an NAIA Champion of Character.
Head Coach
Jonathan Zimmerman introduced her and told a story of how she was a constant professional at every meet they went to. Her character and talent earned the respect of all she came into contact with. A respect signified by the act of a veteran official who did not just tip his cap to Jackson, but gave his cap to her.
"God taught me so much through my sport and through the people I encountered," said Jackson. "It was an amazing opportunity of learning how to love God through loving others."
Worrell was a strikeout master during his time at Biola, and even though he has been gone for over 23 years he still holds the school record for strikeouts in a season.
He then went on to play 14 years in Major League Baseball, representing Biola baseball on a national scale. He was introduced by his college coach Charlie Sarver and his wife, and Worrell gave a lot of credit to Sarver in his acceptance speech.
"Through a lot of different circumstances a lot of what you (Charlie Sarver) taught me at Biola came into play in the pros," said Worrell.
The night finished with closing remarks from Greg Vaughan, Vice President for Enrollment Management, who welcomed the three inductees into the Hall of Fame and thanked them for their contributions to Biola Athletics.
With these three now officially inducted, the BU Hall of Fame now has six members, and will grow to nine next fall.
