Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola scored five goals in the first 17 minutes of its home-opener, cruising to an easy 8-1 win over La Sierra University in a non-conference match on Wednesday night at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles, ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA National Poll, improve to 1-1-0 on the season while the Golden Eagles drop to 3-2-0.

"This season, we are trying to be a lot more high pressure and dictate the pace of the game from the start," said Head Coach Bryan Kuderman. The strategy paid off in the form of seven goals in the first half alone. The Eagles' eight goals were the most scored in a match since Biola beat Whittier College 11-0 on Sept. 8, 2003.

Freshman midfielder John Hanscom scored two of the first three goals of the game, all in the first 11 minutes. Junior forward Daniel Chew also tallied back-to-back goals though they came 16 minutes apart in the first half. Senior Julio Cuevas added the final goal and tallied assists on both of Hanscom's goals.

Just four minutes into the game, Hanscom got the Eagles on the board with a goal early. Julio Cuevas sent a nice ball into the area where Carlos Ballesteros one-touched it over to Hanscom, who blasted it past the keeper from the top of the box.

Two minutes later, the Eagles were at it again as senior Tony Montalvo sliced through the La Sierra defense for a breakaway, beating the keeper with a quick shot to the near post.

Cuevas and Hanscom combined again for Biola's third goal in the early going as the freshman headed in a nice cross by the senior through heavy traffic in the box to make it 3-0 in the 11th minute.

Just three minutes later, Scott Hayes centered a ball to the top of the box to Ballesteros, who this time ripped a shot on the fly as Biola scored its fourth goal in just 14 mintues of play.

Biola would continue the assault in the 17th mintue as Chew aggressivily challenged the keeper and ended up taking it right off his foot and tapping it into the empty net to stretch the lead to five.

Both teams were quiet for the next 17 minutes until Chew recorded another. Sophomore Alex Kincade sent a high cross to the left side of the box where Chew met it and one-touched it into the net.

Biola capped the scoring in the first half with a nice goal by sophomore Sava Pantic. After a few missed attempts by the Eagles, junior Kevin Kiser found a wide open Pantic with a quick pass and the sophomore cleaned up with a nice shot into an open net , making it 7-0 at the end of the first half.

La Sierra cranked up the offense in the second half, recording nine shots after taking just three through the first 45 minutes. The pressure turned into a number of great chances, but none found the back of the net. In teh 74th minute, the Golden Eagles finally broke through with a goal on a header by Dakota Shelton, the brother of former Biola All-Conference defender Cody Shelton. Dakota rose above the crowd to score a great goal, heading the ball into the upper corner on the corner kick by Diego Fontes to cut the lead to 7-1.

The Eagles wasted little time getting that goal back as Julio Cuevas broke free on the far side and cracked a shot toward the near-side goal. A Golden Eagle player slide across in front of the net in an attempt to clear it, but he ended up sliding with the ball into the net to give Biola an 8-1 lead.

Freshman netminder Joshua Crichton got his first win in goal for the Eagles, making three saves in 61:40. Fellow freshman JT Addington closed out the game in net, also making three saves, but allowing the one goal.

With the momentum from the win, the Eagles hit the road to face Marymount College on Friday in a match played at LA Harbor College in Wilmington, CA. The match is slated to being at 7:00 p.m.
