LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's baseball season will continue after all as the Eagles earned the 15th of 16 possible at-large berths and head east to Daytona Beach, Florida, for the 2012 NAIA Baseball Opening Round Tournament hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University beginning on Thursday.
The Eagles (26-27) have drawn the No. 3 seed in the bracket which features teams from five states. The host and No. 1 seed is Embry-Riddle (Fla.), which is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA and is 40-16 on the season.
The No. 2 seed is Auburn Montgomery (Ala.), which earned the fifth at-large berth and is 36-22 overall on the season. Biola faces Warhawks in the first game of the tournament on Thursday afternoon (times are TBD).
Earning the No. 4 seed in the tournament is Southern Poly from Georgia. The Hornets were the final team into the NAIA tournament field as the 16th at-large and are 35-23 on the season. They open against the No. 5 seed in the bracket: Siena Heights (Mich.). The Saints earned an automatic berth as the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Champions and have a record of 31-23 on the year. They are making their first NAIA Tournament Appearance.
The Daytona Bracket is one of nine opening-round brackets. Twenty-nine teams earned automatic berths to the 45-team Opening Round by winner their respective conference/independent/unaffiliated group tournaments or regular-season championships. An additional 16 at-large selections - determined by the final NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll released Sunday - round out the field.
The nine Opening Round winners will join host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at the 56th annual Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, May 25 - June 1.
Two other GSAC teams received berths in the NAIA Tournament. Azusa Pacific is hosting its own bracket while GSAC Tournament Champion Concordia University is the top seed in the Marion Bracket played in Marion, Indiana.
