LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola senior infielder
Vinnie Fayard and junior pitcher
Chris Baek have been named to the 2012 All-Golden State Athletic Conference baseball team as voted on by the conference coaches and announced on Tuesday by the GSAC office.
Fayard, a senior from Corona, led the team and ranked 12th in the GSAC in batting average at .364. He was fourth in the conference in hits with 75 and ranked fifth in RBIs with 42. In addition, Fayard collected 15 doubds, two triples, had four home runs and scored 32 runs. The senior stuck out just five times this season and was 12-of-14 in stolen base attempts.
Fayard led the team with 23 multi-hit games and had 13 multi-RBI games as well. He collected four hits in a game twice this season including going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored at Arizona Christian University in early February, then following it up with a 4-for-4 performance on March 1 at Westmont.
Baek, a junior from Claremont, was one of the best pitchers in the conference, finishing with the fifth-best ERA in the conference at 2.88. Despite a low ERA, he was just 5-4 on the season as all four losses came in games where he allowed three or fewer earned runs.
Baek, who missed much of the last two years after having Tommy John surgery, led the team with four complete games and struck out 57 batters while holding opposing hitters to a .251 batting average. In conference games, Baek was 3-3 with 1.88 ERA and looked sharp near the end of the season.
On March 23, Baek threw a complete-game shutout at The Master's College, striking out seven and allowing just five hits in Biola's 6-0 win. He pitched another complete game the following week in a 4-2 loss to Concordia in which he allowed just three earned runs and again struck out seven. His final two games he pitched into the ninth in both, splitting those two games.
Biola closed out the season with a 25-25 record including an 18-14 GSAC mark--good enough for third place in the conference. The Eagles open the GSAC Tournament on Tuesday, taking on The Master's College at 7:00 p.m.
