LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola senior guard
Emily Drews has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 8 Women's Basketball teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released on Monday. The honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and academically.
Drews is one of six members of the college division first-team which is made up of NAIA, Canadian and junior colleges. District 8 encompasses Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Alaska and the 13 provinces and territories in Canada. Five of the six members were from the GSAC.
Drews, a senior from Chico, maintained a 3.40 GPA in her pursuit of a degree in English at Biola. Her contributions on the court have been equally impressive. Drews is averaging 10 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the Eagles, this year, adding 33 assists and 11 blocked shots. She has reached double-figures in 12 of Biola's 22 games including putting up a team-high 19 points against Hope International University on Jan. 21.
To be nominated for all-district consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and has spent at least one year at the school.
As members of the district's first-team, Drews is now eligible to earn CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America honors. Seven Biola athletes have ever earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, the last was volleyball player Joy Talcott, who earned third-team honors earlier this year. The 2011-12 Women's Basketball Academic All-American team is scheduled to be announced on Monday, February 20.
