Eagles Open Season with 2-0 Win Over St. Francis

Ashleigh Cooley

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Sophomore Ashleigh Cooley and freshman Allexa Mendoza each scored a goal in their first matches at Biola to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 non-conference victory over the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Saturday night.

Biola completely dominated the match, outshooting St. Francis 15-1 to drop the visitors to 1-2-0 on the season.

Cooley, a transfer from NCAA Division I Lehigh University, got the Eagles on the board in the 17th minute, blasting home a loose ball in the box.

After a number of opportunities to score, Biola finally put its second goal on the board in the 67th minute. Freshman Victoria Dalla Zanna played a nice cross from the left endline which found the foot of Mendoza, who found the back of the net for the insurance goal.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Frushon recorded the victory, playing 73 minutes and facing just one shot. Freshman Meagan Bellefeuille wrapped up the shutout victory with a solid final 17 minutes in goal.

The victory by the Eagles gives them a 5-0-2 record in their last seven home openers and a mark of 12-4-3 overall in such contests.

Biola returns to action on Friday (Sept. 3), traveling to face NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles return home for a non-conference match on Monday (Sept. 6) against Colorado Christian University at 11:00 a.m.
