Jessilyn Conicelli recorded her second-straight double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Biola to a 79-60 win over Evangel University in the final game of the 2010 Biola University Holiday Classic at Chase Gymnasium on Thursday night.
The Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA National Rankings, improve to 11-2 on the season, picking up their eighth win in their last nine games. The Crusaders fall to 4-7 overall after losing both of their games in the Classic.
Conicelli was 11-of-17 from the field in the contest and added four steals and three assists. All five starters scored in double-figures including Emily Drews who scored 14 points while Jennifer French added 13 points--12 of which came in the second half.
In the first half, Biola roared out to a 22-11 lead as Conicelli scored 11 of those points in the early going. Evangel used a late run to pull within three and the Eagles headed to the half with a 27-22 lead. The Crusaders were plagued by 15 turnovers despite shooting 44 percent in the opening stanza. The Eagles also shot 44 percent and also struggled with possession, turning the ball over 11 times.
Biola stretch the lead to six early in the second half on a three-pointer by Emily Drews, but Evangel responded with a 7-0 run, taking back the lead on a jumper by KJ Waltrip to go up 31-30 at the 15:17 mark. But the Eagles came out of a timeout with a great back-door play to Reece to end the run and go back on top.
After a bucket by Evangel, Reece converted a three-point play on the other end which started a 22-5 Biola run over the next five minutes to go up 54-38 at the 9:52 mark. Evangel made things interesting in the final five minutes, cutting the lead to 11, but Jennifer French responded with three-straight three-pointers to stretch the Biola advantage back to 17 with four minutes left.
In the end, Biola forced 25 turnovers by Evangel and converted them into 32 points. The Eagles also dominated inside, outscoring the Crusaders 36-20 in the paint and out-rebounding Evangel 26-23.
Biola returns to GSAC play to start the new year, traveling to The Master's College for a conference matchup on Tuesday, January 4 at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles return home on Saturday, January 8 to host San Diego Christian College.
