FULLERTON, Calif. --- Despite scoring early and controlling play throughout, Biola surrendered a goal with just over seven minutes left in regulation and another just over one minute into overtime, falling 2-1 at Hope International in a GSAC match on Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles suffer their third loss in their last four matches, falling to 4-6-1 and to 2-3-0 in GSAC play. The Royals improve to 7-6-0 on the season and to 2-4-0 in the conference.
Biola got on the board in a hurry, scoring in the fifth minute as senior
Derek Friehe split the defense and scored on a breakaway to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Biola had a number of chances to increase the lead throughout and didn't let a ball get behind the defense through the first 80 minutes.
However, the wheels came off late on a pair of flukey goals by Hope. The first came in the 83rd minute as a long cross from the byline met the head of Edgar Bran and just snuck over the outstretched arm of the Biola goalkeeper. The goal tied the match late to force overtime.
Just over one minute into overtime, Bran struck again, this time with a long inside-out shot from 40 yards out which curled around the keeper and into the top right corner.
It was the second consecutive match between the two schools that went overtime, though Biola managed to pull out a 3-2 victory on home turf last season. It was also just the Eagles' second loss to Hope in the program's history. The first came when the two last met in Fullerton, a 2-0 Hope victory.
Biola looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday (Oct. 16), hosting Concordia University in a GSAC match beginning at 5:00 p.m. The match will be the second game of three in Biola's Fall Ball and Tailgate weekend featuring Biola and Concordia doing battle in three different sports. Women's Soccer opens the day against Concordia at 2:30 p.m. followed by the men at 5:00. The day wraps up with Biola hosting CUI in volleyball at 7:30 p.m. Come be a part of the day's festivities which include food, prizes and fun throughout.
