ORANGE, Calif. --- The Biola swim teams wrapped up the first half of the season with a dominating performance in a dual meet against Chapman University on Saturday.
The Eagle men cruised to a 130-83 victory, winning 10 of 13 events. The women's team needed a victory in the final event--the 200 yard freestyle relay--to pull out a 125-114 victory.
Biola had four double-winners, two on each side. For the women, juniors
April Smith and
Emily Mosbacher each won a pair of events while sophomore diver
Derek Gutierrez took top honors in the diving competitions and freshman
Jacob Neller won a pair of events as well.
The men has seven different swimmers win events. Neller finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.36, a season-best for him, and in the 200 fly in 1:56.85, which bettered his school-record in the event by nearly two full seconds. Gutierrez won the 1m diving competition by nearly 38 points and took the 3m title by over 57.
Other event winners were
Paul Mendoza in the 1650 freestyle (17.30.96),
Zach Perkins in the 50 free (21.57),
Chris Stutzman in the 100 free (47.80),
Nathan Roe in the 500 free (4:58.56) and
Luke Perryman in the 200 breaststroke (2:41.49).
On the women's side, Smith breezed to victory in the 200 breaststroke, recording a season-best time of 2:28.52. She also took top honors in the 400 individual medley with a 4:46.51, nearly nine seconds better than the second-place finisher.
Mosbacher took care of business in the sprint freestyle events, barely beating out freshman teammate
Samantha Oja in the 50 free and the 100 free. In the 50, Mosbacher swam a 25.82 to edge Oja, who had a 25.91, while in the 100, Mosbacher touched in 56.70, beating out Oja by nearly two seconds.
Other women's winners were
Ashley Logan in the 1650 free (19:48.80),
Bailey Johnson in the 200 free (2:02.09),
Amber Kiel in the 200 backstroke (2:15.15) and
Katie McLeland in the 500 free (5:24.89).
Biola returns to the pool in 2010, hosting Grand Canyon University (Ariz.) in a home meet at the Splash Water Park in La Mirada. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
