Alberts Earns Third-Straight NAIA All-American Honors

Eagles add three more to Scholar-Athlete Squad

Megann Alberts
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the third time in as many years, Biola forward Megann Alberts has earned NAIA All-American honors, this time being named an NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Third Team All-American as announced by the national office on Tuesday.

Alberts, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colorado, wrapped up an impressive career with the Eagles by averaging 15.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. She finished second in the conference with 40 blocked shots, averaging 1.3 per game. She was also eighth in both scoring and rebounding.

Alberts reached double-figures in 26 of Biola's 32 games, scoring 20 or more point in eight of those games. She scored a season-high 29 points in two games this season, the last coming in Biola's home win over Fresno Pacific in February.

The senior forward came up big in Biola's two games at the NAIA National Championship tournament last week, scoring 16 points in the Eagles' 65-57 win over Trevecca Nazarene in the first round. After helping Biola to its first NAIA Tournament win in the program's history, she followed up with a 25-point performance in a tough loss to Lee University in the second round.

Alberts, who was an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American the last two seasons, became Biola's first women's basketball player to earn All-GSAC honors in three-straight seasons after earning the honor this year. She wraps up her impressive career in the top 10 in nearly every career offensive category at Biola. Alberts is third in scoring with 1,891 points, second in rebounding with 914 and fourth in blocks with 117.

Alberts was one of 10 GSAC players to earn All-America honors and one of six on the top three teams. GSAC Player of the Year Colleen Planeta from Point Loma Nazarene, California Baptist's Nicole Davis and Vanguard's Lauren Gregory all earned First-Team All-America honors. Azusa Pacific's Alex Moore-Porter was the GSAC's lone representative on the Second Team and Stacy Nanninga of The Master's College joined Alberts on the Third Team.

The Eagles also had three players named NAIA Division I Women's Basketball 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes. They were junior guards Chelsea De Luca and Elise Paty along with sophomore forward Megan Jackson. Student-athletes must be nominated by their head coach, have achieved junior academic status and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale to be eligible for the honor.
