Eagles Amazing Season Comes to an End in 4-0 Quarterfinal Loss

FRESNO, Calif. --- Biola's record-breaking run in the 2009 NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament came to an end on Wednesday as the Eagles fell 4-0 to No. 3 University of Rio Grande in the tournament quarterfinals.

Biola wraps up the season at 13-5-4, one of the best overall records in school history, reaching the NAIA quarterfinals for the first time ever. Rio Grande improves to 18-3-2 and advances to the semifinals where it faces the final remaining GSAC team in the field, The Master's College.

The Eagles defeat came over the final 20 minutes of the first half, when Rio Grande scored all four goals. In the 25th minute, Joel Theissen converted a free kick from just outside the box, curling the shot around the wall and tucking it into the left corner for the first strike.

Just eight minutes later, Scott Bibby added a goal firing a shot into the top right corner off a cross to put Rio Grande up 2-0. The RedStorm added another goal in the 38th minute as Theissen converted yet another free kick from just outside the box in the same manner: bending it around the wall and into the goal.

Rio Grande capped the scoring with 1:30 left in the half as Dylan Williams shot a ball into the goal off a cross to make it 4-0.

Biola recorded 10 shots including a pair on goal--both of which came in the first half. However, for the first time this season, the Eagles were unable to find the back of the net.

Biola's run to the NAIA Quarterfinals was an impressive one, featuring 11 shutouts, the team's first NAIA tournament appearance in 22 years and a 13-5-4 overall record. The Eagles will return all but four players next year (two of which are starters) and should be one of the favorites in the GSAC race.
