PHOENIX --- The Biola University women's golf team began its second season as a varsity sport with a strong performance by the three individual golfers at the Grand Canyon University Women's Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
The tournament was a big competition with 15 teams and 10 individuals competiting the hot Arizona sun. The Eagles had three of those individuals, sending a contingent of three freshmen in Whitney Hobbs, Jennifer Kent and Angela Ojeda.
The trio did well in their first collegiate competition with Hobbs finishing tied for 61st in the tournament with a 36-hole total of 177. Kent wasn't too far behind in 69th with a 184 while Ojeda wrapped up her first college tournament with a 185, dropping 11 strokes on the second day after a nervous first round.
"We are very encouraged by the performance of these three freshman," said Head Coach John Lane. "They all competed well in their first college tournament and learned a lot out there. I am excited for the talent we have and about the future of this team!"
The Eagles started the women's varsity golf program last year with a pair of golfers. However, injuries to both golfers near the end of the fall season ended the first year shortly after it started. Coach Lane has recruited four new golfers for the upcoming season which will be the first full season in the program's brief history.
Biola returns to action next week, traveling to the Cal State Monterey Bay Invitational on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 6-7) in Seaside, Calif.
