LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Swimming hard in the wind and rain was tough enough, but facing one of the top NCAA Division II programs in the country proved to be a tough task for Biola's swim teams on Saturday as both teams lost to Grand Canyon University.
The Eagles were able to win just three events on the women's side as freshman
Christine Tixier and
Megan Nerud again lead the way. Tixier scored a victory for Biola in the 100 butterfly with an impressive time of 59.85, beating the field by nearly two seconds. She also swam the anchor leg on the women's 400 free relay team which won its race in dominating fashion with a time of 3:51.37. She was joined on the relay by
Rachael Sirjord,
Monica Hurt and
Amber Kiel.
Freshman
Megan Nerud also won an event for the Eagles, taking first in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.86--a full five seconds better than the second-place swimmer. That was a national qualifying time for the freshman, who also added another in the 50 freestyle with a 25.92--good enough for fourth place.
On the men's side, the Eagles'
Chris Stutzman was the highlight of the day, recording season-best times in the freestyle sprints. He took third in the 50 free with a time of 21.87 and finished second in the 100 in 48.84.
Biola closes out the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 28, traveling to Concordia for a dual meet at the William Wollett Aquatic Complex in Irvine at 11:00 a.m.
