LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola pitcher/first baseman
Billy Vopinek has been named to the 2009 All-Golden State Athletic Conference Baseball team as announced by the conference on Friday.
Vopinek, a junior from Bellflower, was outstanding both from the mound and from the plate this season. As a relief pitcher, Vopinek broke the school record with 17 saves, posting a 1-0 record while allowing just one earned run in 33 innings pitched for a microscopic 0.27 ERA. The junior recorded 25 strikeouts and 11 walks with opponents hitting just .167 off of him.
Offensively, Vopinek batted .335, hitting four doubles, two triples, two home runs, 19 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He had 11 multi-hit games this season including a pair of three-hit performances. That included a 3-for-4 performance against California Baptist University on April 2nd. In that game, Vopinek hit the first home run of his Biola career to pull the Eagles within one in the eighth, then hit a walk-off two-run single in the ninth to give Biola the win.
Vopinek is now eligible for NAIA All-American honors, which will be announced in mid-May. The Eagles open up play in the GSAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, finishing the regular season with a 32-20 record and a 23-13 mark in conference play. Biola opens against #11 Fresno Pacific on Tuesday (May 5) at 9:00 a.m.
