Vopinek Named GSAC Player of the Week

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola pitcher/first baseman Billy Vopinek has been named the GSAC Baseball Player of the Week for the week of March 30-April 5 as announced by the conference office on Monday.

Vopinek, a junior from Bellflower, registered a .538 batting average, collecting 7 hits in 13 at bats as Biola went 3-1 last week. He hit his first home run with the Eagles on Thursday and also added a pair of game-winning RBIs. 

Vopinek was 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate in a two-day sweep of California Baptist on Wednesday and Thursday. In Thursday's contest, Vopinek hit his first home run of the season in the eighth to pull the Eagles within one of the visiting Lancers. Then in the bottom of the ninth, he hit a walk-off single, driving in two runs to give the Eagles an 8-7 win. 

Vopinek collected the lone RBI in Biola's 1-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader at The Master's College. He also earned 2 saves in a pair of perfect final innings in the 9-6 win at California Baptist and the 1-0 win at The Master's.

For the season, Vopinek is batting .341 with one home run, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored. He is second on the team in batting average but first in on-base percentage at .491. On the hill, Vopinek is 1-0 with a GSAC-best 12 saves and a 0.41 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 22 innings pitched this season. He has gone 11-straight inning without allowing a run.

Biola (21-17 overall) returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 7), hosting cross-town rival Whittier College in a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m.
