Natasha Miller Shatters Pentathlon Record in Winning NAIA Title

Sophomore wins four of five events to take second indoor title in school history

Natasha Miller
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- Biola's Natasha Miller won four out of five events and shattered a 15-year-old NAIA record en route to winning the Pentathlon title at the 2009 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday afternoon.

Miller, a sophomore from Abbotsford, British Columbia, becomes just the second Biola female track and field athlete to win an individual NAIA track and field title, doing so in dominating fashion. Her total of 3,943 points in the event shattered the 15-year-old NAIA record of 3,771 points set by Kim Vanderhoek of Simon Fraser University (B.C.) in 1994.

She opened the day with a narrow victory in the 60m Hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.86 seconds, edging out Azusa Pacific's Zora Golcevska by one-thousandth of a second. The close win gave her 939 points and a narrow two-point lead after the first event.

Next up was the high jump, an event in which Miller already has the best mark in the NAIA this season. She matched that mark with an impressive jump of five feet, 8-3/4 inches (1.75m), winning the event and setting a new NAIA Indoor Pentathlon record as well. The record jump gave her a 182-point lead over Golcevska heading into the third event.

Despite struggling a bit in the shotput, Miller still managed a decent throw of 31 feet, eight inches (9.65m) to maintain her lead heading into the final two events.

The fourth event was the long jump, another event in which the sophomore excels, ranking among the top 10 in the NAIA. Once again, she blew away the competition in the event with a leap of 18 feet, 6-1/2 inches, winning by five inches and stretching her lead back to 102 points.

That meant all Miller needed to do was finish within about four seconds of Golcevska in the 800m run to secure the overall victory. However, she left no doubt, winning the event by over three seconds to wrap up the individual title.

Miller's total of 3,943 points in the event establishes a new school record and established personal bests in the 60m hurdles, shot put, long jump and 800m run. She becomes the second Biola female athlete to win an individual track and field championship. The only other was Elizabeth Onyambu, who won the 1,000-yard run in 1994. She also added a pair of outdoor championships in the 800m run in 1992 and 1993.

Miller is still favored in a number of events still to be contested this week. She has the NAIA's best marks this season in the triple jump and high jump, is seventh in the 60m hurdles and 10th in the long jump. She will run in the prelims and semifinals of the 60m hurdles on Friday along with the long jump. On Saturday, she will run in the 60m hurdle finals and compete in the triple jump and high jump.
