LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Thanks to one of its best seasons in program history, Biola placed four players on the All-Golden State Athletic Conference men's soccer team as announced the conference office on Monday.
A trio of sophomores and a junior were the Eagles representatives on the team as Biola placed four on the all-conference squad for the first time since the 2005 season. The four honorees are junior
Kennedy Chongo, sophomore
Marco Ruvalcaba, sophomore
Aaron Fenlason, and sophomore
Abraham Gomez.
Leading the way was Chongo, a junior forward, who repeated as an All-GSAC selection. Chongo, who is from Lusaka, Zambia, scored seven goals and added three assists this season with three of those goals coming in GSAC play. The junior recorded a pair of match-winning goals this season including an overtime winner as Biola defeated Vanguard in the final home game of the season. Chongo also had an assist in that match.
The sophomore brigade was led by Ruvalcaba, a local product from nearby La Mirada High School. The forward led the team in scoring with 11 goals and added four assists. His goal total so far is the most by a Biola player since Cristian Rus recorded 11 during the 2005 season. Ruvalcaba recorded goals in 10 of 16 matches this season including a stretch where he had six goals in as many matches. The sophomore also had a pair of game winners including the lone goal in Biola's 1-0 upset victory over Azusa Pacific earlier this season.
Fenlason, a sophomore goalkeeper from Rancho Bernardo, had one of the best seasons by a goalkeeper in school history. Fenlason posted a 12-3-1 overall record with 10 shutouts, surrendering just 11 goals to finish with a 0.66 goals against average, the second-best mark in the conference. He opened the season with a school-record seven-straight shutouts and made 41 saves while facing 162 shots. One of Fenlason's best matches this season came recently as he made six saves while facing a season-high 17 shots to earn the 1-0 shutout win at Point Loma Nazarene.
Gomez, a sophomore midfielder from Chula Vista, rounded out the quartet for Biola. Gomez, who is recognized as one of the best attacking center-midfielders in the GSAC, had a pair of assists on the season, but created numerous scoring chances with his play. After playing his freshman season at San Diego City College, he has made an immediate impact in the conference, playing nearly every minute of the 14 matches he appeared in this season. Though he was not able to find the back of the net, Gomez recorded 29 shots including 13 on frame.
Biola closed out the regular season with a 12-3-1 record and finished third in the regular-season GSAC standings with a 7-2-1 mark. The Eagles open the GSAC Tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 4), hosting No. 6 seed Vanguard University in a quarterfinal match beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field. Tickets for the game are available at the door and cost $8 for adults and $5 for students.
