LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola senior middle blocker
Kelsey Christoferson has been named to the 2009 All-Golden State Athletic Conference team as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Christoferson, a senior from Carlsbad, Calif., played a huge part in helping turn what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Eagles into yet another successful season, culminating in Biola's third-straight NAIA Tournament appearance. She moved from middle blocker to outside hitter midway through the season after a rash of injuries where she excelled and helped keep the Eagles' momentum going.
The senior led the team and was fifth in the conference in hitting percentage at .345, recording 260 kills (2.41 per set) and adding 83 blocks (0.77 per set). Christoferson, who appeared in 29 of the team's 31 matches, also had 46 digs, 10 assists and posted five solo blocks. When all was said and done, she recorded 304 points, averaging 2.81 per set.
Christoferson had a season-high 18 kills in Biola's four-set win over Westmont College in La Mirada on Sept. 29 in one of the first matches she played in as an outside hitter. She reached double-figures in kills in 11 matches and had at least one block in each match she played in. In addition, she hit better than .400 in 13 of Biola's 31 matches hitting better than .300 in 17.
Azusa Pacific's Jill Baker was named the GSAC Player of the Year while the Cougars' Chris Keefe received Coach of the Year honors.
Biola finished the regular season with a 22-9 overall record, tying for fourth place in the GSAC standings with a 13-7 record. The Eagles earned one of 11 first-round byes in the NAIA Tournament and will return to action at the NAIA Championships in Sioux City, Iowa, December 1-5.
