LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Though just a small meet featuring two teams competing against each other in indoor events, Biola University's first home track meet in decades proved to be a huge success with eight new NAIA Qualifying marks established and four school records falling by the wayside.
The Biola Indoor Qualifier meet featured athletes from Biola University and Soka University along with a few other individual competitors, run on the track at Al Barbour Field on Saturday. It is believed to be the first home track meet at Biola in nearly 22 years.
Four school records were broken during the meet including two by sophomore Natasha Miller. Miller opened the day with an impressive jump of 5-8.75 feet (1.75m) in the high jump, breaking the school record and qualifying for the NAIA Indoor National Championships by bettering the "A" standard height. She then returned just a few hours later and ran the 60m hurdles in a lightning-fast time of 9.12 seconds. That also established a new school record and was another NAIA "A" standard. Miller also rounded out the day with a leap of 17-9.25 feet (5.42m) in the long jump to record an NAIA "B" standard.
The track portion of the meet got off to a quick start with the women's distance medley relay team posting a new school record time of 12:32.17. The quartet of Katie Thede, Brooke Forsi#, Erika Perez, and Nychele Fischetti also qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships with an "A" time.
Another relay, the women's 4 x 100m relay, set a new school record and qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships as Forsi, Fischetti, Miller and Janette Hill crossed the line in 4:00.89.
The final relay of the day for the women's team was the 4 x 800m relay team of Fischetti, Perez, Thede, and Kelsey Gasner, which earned an NAIA provisional qualifying time of 9:46.21.
In the field events, Fischetti earned an automatic qualifying distance in the triple jump with an impressive leap of 37-11 feet (11.56m). Another impressive feat came from Erin Hobson in the pole vault as she cleared 10-10 feet (3.30m) in the pole vault to earn a "B" standard for the NAIA Indoor Championships.
One other outdoor school record was set during the festivities on Saturday as Naomi Sornoso threw the shot put 35-2 feet (10.72m) during the field portion of the meet.
Biola returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 7), traveling to Concordia for the CUI Indoor Qualifying meet.
