Schmidt Breaks School Record in the Half Marathon

Senior also punches ticket to NAIAs with impressive run

Kristin Schmidt
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola senior Kristin Schmidt shattered the school record and qualified for the NAIA National Championships with a strong performance in the half marathon, finishing with a time of 1:24.33 while running at the Carlsbad Half Marathon on Sunday.

Overall, Schmidt placed 91st out of 7,151 runners and was third in her age group (18-24). Her time was nearly 10 seconds better than the previous school record and was below the automatic qualifying time of 1:33 required to run at the NAIA Outdoor Championships in Edwardsville, Indiana, this May.

Schmidt, a four-time NAIA All-American, is finishing up her schooling at Biola and doing student-teaching during the day which requires her to train on her own. Schmidt will be looking to earn her third NAIA All-American award this spring at the outdoor championships.

The Biola track and field team hosts its first home meet in nearly 30 years on Saturday (Jan. 31). The indoor qualifier will feature a number of local NAIA schools and is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
